Drive Units
Simrad developed and manufactures its own
powerful drive units to steer your boat through
the toughest conditions on the longest crossings.
Several models are available to fit the various
types and sizes of boat and steering system.
Reversible Pumps
Most power boats from 26’ and up use hydraulic
hand steering. The Simrad range of reversible
hydraulic pumps are easily adaptable to the hydraulic
steering to give the autopilot a smooth
and precise control.
The Simrad feedbacks are high resolution units that
contribute to the soft but accurate steering. The rotary
model is used in most installations and linked to the
rudder stock. The linear drive is primarily for outboards
and mounts on the hydraulic cylinder. Some drive units
have the feedback built in with the benefit
of a simpler installation.
Hydraulic Linear Drives
Linear drives are the most preferred
on sailboats. When attached to the
quadrant or tiller it has direct
control and slack in wires or
cable is avoided. Several hydraulic
models are available in the HLD range.
They are all equipped with a bypass
valve and need not be detached when
steering by hand.
All hydraulic linear drives are also
available in a split version with the
pump separated from the ram
and interconnected with 1m
(3ft) hoses. This will make
the installation more convenient
when space becomes a problem.
For the bigger sailboats, a dual
ram version is available.
Mechanical Linear Drive
MLD200 is a mechanical linear
drive for boats between 32 and 43’.
It requires less space and has a built in
feedback. The back drive force is low
when steering by hand, and your
fingertip feeling is maintained.
The unit has a friction clutch that
prevents overload.
I/O Drive
The MSD50 Linear drive is
particularly designed for stern drive
or I/O boats with power assisted
steering. It fits nicely on top of the
servo valve. Several mounting kits
are available for the various types
of engines.
Remote controls
HLD2000L

Remote controls are very
useful auxiliary equipment
for the autopilot. You can power
steer the boat from other locations
than the helm, using buttons or
a lever.
The R3000X is an inexpensive
handheld remote that provides
non-follow-up push button steering,
mode change and course change.
S100 is a neat non-follow-up joystick
control for the wheelhouse or the
flybridge.
