TheSimradMS70Scienticmultibeamsonartransducerisdesignedtobemountedon
adropkeel.Fromthisposition,itwilllookhorizontallyathwartship,andprovidea
matrixofbeams.Thiscongurationallowsforcharacterizationandvolumeestimation
ofaschoolofshusingasingletransmission.Schoolsofshcanbetracked,followed
andstudiedusingmultipletransmissions.TheMS70alsoenablesdetectionand
characterizationofschoolsclosetosurface.
TheMS70providesanacousticmatrixof500beams(25horizontaland20vertical).
ThisenablestheMS70toprovideinstantaneous3Dvolumedata.Whereothersystems
needmultiplepingstoprovide3Dvolumedata,theMS70canprovidethisusingasingle
ping.ThisallowstheMS70toprovidemoreaccuratedata.Forexample,aschoolofsh
canchangeitsstructureseveraltimesduringthetimeothersystemsneedtocoverthe
school.MultipleconsecutivepingsenabletheMS70toprovidetrue4Ddata,wheretime
isthefourthdimension.Thisallowsforimprovedcharacterizationofschoolstructures
thatarechangingovertime.
